Asbestos is a term used to describe six naturally occurring silicate minerals composed of long and thin fibrous crystals. It's commonly used in building materials during the 1940s and the late 1980s because of its durability and fire resistance. However, it may produce dust containing asbestos fibers when it's broken or damaged in some way, thus can pose various health problems such as pleural plaques, asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma when being inhaled or ingested.

Asbestos has been used in home products and also automotive parts. Taking precautions when handling asbestos material is necessary, in order to minimize the release of asbestos fibers. If you are unsure about how to safely taking care or remove the material on your own, getting help from a professional asbestos removal is perfect.

However, you can also take part in protecting yourself and the people around you by following these simple precautions before actually calling for the asbestos removalist.

  1. Work in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Use a wet cloth to dust instead of the dry ones if you need to sweep or clean up.
  3. Use a wet mop on non-carpeted floors.
  4. Wet the asbestos-containing surface to reduce the risk of dust particles floating into the air.
  5. Try to not using any power tools to break any asbestos product. If possible, try using your hands first or at least wear a disposable half-face filter respirator that is appropriate for asbestos.
  6. Vacuum using a vacuum cleaner with a high-efficiency particle air (HEPA) filter.
  7. Use doormats and remove shoes before entering.
  8. Make sure to thoroughly wash your hands and have a shower after you've finished with anything that involves asbestos-containing products.
